Bulls say
Capitol Federal Finl is attractive because it is successfully transitioning from a legacy thrift model into a more diversified commercial bank, broadening both its revenue base and geographic reach while maintaining conservative underwriting. The shift is already showing up in fundamentals, with net interest margin rising for seven consecutive quarters to 2.24% in FY 2Q26, average loan yield up 30 bps to 4.37%, and net interest income expected to increase 16.4% this fiscal year to $210 million. Strong capital ratios, including a 10.3% TCE ratio and 9.5% CBLR at March 31, support loan growth, a regular $0.085 quarterly dividend, and ongoing share repurchases, while improving efficiency and fee income should further lift profitability.
Bears say
Capitol Federal Finl is facing a negative outlook because loan growth remains slow and concentrated in a shifting mix of residential mortgages, CRE, and commercial construction, leaving net loan growth at only a low-single-digit pace while the loan-to-deposit ratio stayed elevated at 117% at March 31. Funding pressure from $1.71 billion of FHLB borrowings at a 3.64% average cost, along with the risk of Fed rate hikes, could squeeze the net interest margin and NII, while crossing the $10 billion asset threshold could cut interchange revenue by $6.0-6.5 million annually and reduce EPS by about $0.05. Credit weakness is another concern, as nonperformers rose to 0.60% of loans and a $4 million specific reserve was recorded on two hotel-secured participation loans, making the stock more vulnerable despite strong capital and ongoing buybacks.
