BBT Analyst Ratings
Bulls say
Beacon Financial is attractive because management is executing on the key levers that should lift returns: targeted cost reductions, a more active buyback program, and a renewed push to improve efficiency after the Brookline/Berkshire combination. Core fundamentals also look constructive, with 3Q core EPS of $0.77, net interest margin up 4 bps to 3.85%, loans at $17.7 billion, and capital ratios solid at 11.8% CET1 and a 9.35% TCE ratio. In addition, CRE concentration has fallen below 300% to 295%, giving the bank more flexibility to pursue commercial growth, expand fee income, and support higher profitability over time.
Bears say
Beacon Financial is facing a weaker credit profile as nonperforming loans rose to 0.91% and nonperforming assets to 0.75%, driven by migration in two larger commercial real estate loans, including an office property in Stamford, CT that may take time to resolve. Elevated net charge-offs at 30 bps and $8.9M of provisioning underscore that credit costs remain pressured, while the decline in the allowance to 1.32% suggests less cushion if deterioration continues. The outlook is further weakened by management’s expectation that net charge-offs stay somewhat elevated and by the risk that a deteriorating economy could slow loan growth, compress margin, and push credit costs higher.
