ATLANTA, Nov. 10, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Atlantic American Corporation (Nasdaq- AAME) today reported net income for the three month period ended September 30, 2020 of $1.9 million, or $0.09 per diluted share, as compared to net loss of $1.4 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, for the comparable period in 2019. For the nine month period ended September 30, 2020, the Company reported net income of $0.3 million, or nil per diluted share, as compared to net loss of $1.7 million, or $0.10 per diluted share, for the comparable period in 2019. The increase in net income during the third quarter of 2020 was primarily due to a $5.5 million decrease in insurance benefits and losses incurred somewhat offset by a decrease in unrealized gains on equity securities of $1.7 million for the third quarter of 2020 as compared to the third quarter of 2019. The increase in net income for the nine month period ended September 30, 2020 was primarily due to a $14.3 million decrease in insurance benefits and losses incurred mostly offset by a decrease of $9.9 million of net unrealized gains on equity securities during the nine month period ended September 30, 2020 as compared to the comparable period in 2019. Changes in unrealized gains and losses on equity securities for the applicable periods are primarily the result of fluctuations in the market values of the Company's equity investments.

Atlantic American Reports Third Quarter Results

ATLANTA, Aug.  11, 2020  (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Atlantic American Corporation (Nasdaq- AAME) today reported net income for the three month period ended June 30, 2020 of $6.5 million, or $0.30 per diluted share, as compared to net loss of $4.4 million, or $0.22 per diluted share, for the comparable period in 2019.  For the six month period ended June 30, 2020, the Company reported net loss of $1.6 million, or $0.09 per diluted share, as compared to net loss of $0.3 million, or $0.02 per diluted share, for the comparable period in 2019.  The increase in net income during the second quarter of 2020 was primarily due to a $7.3 million decrease in total benefits and expenses coupled with an increase in unrealized gains on equity securities of $6.7 million for the second quarter of 2020 as compared to the second quarter of 2019.  The net loss for the six month period ended June 30, 2020 was primarily due to $7.1 million of net unrealized losses on equity securities during the six month period ended June 30, 2020 as compared to $1.2 million of unrealized gains on equity securities during the comparable period in 2019.  Changes in unrealized gains and losses on equity securities for the applicable periods are primarily the result of fluctuations in the market values of the Company’s equity investments.

Atlantic American Corporation Reports Second Quarter Results for 2020

ATLANTA, May  11, 2020  (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Atlantic American Corporation (Nasdaq- AAME) today reported net loss of $8.1 million, or $0.40 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2020 compared to net income of $4.2 million, or $0.19 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2019. The increase in net loss is primarily the result of unrealized losses on equity securities of $8.5 million in the current quarter compared to unrealized gains on equity securities of $6.5 million in the prior year quarter. The market value of the Company’s investment portfolio was significantly impacted by the material declines in the capital markets related to the COVID-19 pandemic and related economic developments. Excluding the effects of realized or unrealized gains or losses and taxes, operating loss (as defined below) improved to $2.0 million in the current year quarter from $2.6 million in the prior year quarter, primarily as a result of favorable loss experience in the Medicare supplement line of business in the Company’s life and health operations. Total insurance premiums increased 1.7% to $45.6 million in the current year quarter compared to $44.8 million in the prior year quarter.  The increase in insurance premiums is primarily the result of an 8.1% increase in the Company’s property and casualty operations somewhat offset by a marginal decline in the life and health operations.
