After a disagreement with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Hoskinson ventured out on his own to create a blockchain improving on issues including scalability and interoperability. Unlike Bitcoin and Ethereum, Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform, which many consider to be a more sustainable and energy-friendly alternative to proof-of-work.

Cardano was founded by Charles Hoskinson, the co-founder of Ethereum. Development of the blockchain platform began in 2015 and was launched in 2017.

Cardano has a supply cap of 45 billion ADA. There are currently 32 billion ADA in circulation. ADA is the native token used on the Cardano network. 

Cardano is named after an Italian Renaissance mathematician, Gerolamo Cardano, and its native token ADA is named after Ada Lovelace, a 19th-century English mathematician sometimes credited as the first computer programmer.
